Discussion with guest from the USA

On 20 January 2025, our class welcomed Demetrius Merkey, an American Fulbright Scholar who is currently working as a teaching assistant. He shared his opinions and thoughts on various topics related to the United States.

He gave us information about the US government. He mentioned that schools teach students about the government, but the quality of this education varies.

Why this was an empowering experience

He also discussed the law that gives Americans the right to own guns. He also talked about the importance of a free press in the US and the need for people to think critically about the information they receive to avoid misinformation.

This visit helped our class to better understand key aspects of American society, including how the government works, challenges in education and equal opportunities, debates about gun laws and the role of the media. Being able to discuss politics, society, the media and more in English with a native speaker was an empowering experience!

The visit was organised by the US Embassy and its MeetUS programme.
