Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give

During our English AP class we discussed an excerpt from the novel The Hate U Give and one week later, on 14th September, we were given the opportunity to meet the author of this novel, Angie Thomas.

The young adult novel centers on 16-year-old Starr, who lives in two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she grew up and her posh suburban prep-school. However, these worlds collide when her dark-skinned childhood friend Khalil is shot by a white police officer and she is the only witness. Khalil was innocent and frightened Starr found her voice, as did Angie Thomas through Starr. The (aspiring) author speaks for racial equality and hers is already considered a „classic of our time“ (John Green).

When meeting Angie Thomas at the International Youth Literature Festival, she first read an excerpt from her novel which was then read in German. After that, she was interviewed by the host and her audience. At the end of the event she signed our books and we were able to take pictures with her.

Overall this experience was one-of-a-kind and our expectations were completely fulfilled.

In unserem Englisch LK haben wir einen Ausschnitt aus dem Roman The Hate U give besprochen und dann am 14. September die Autorin des Romans, Angie Thomas, getroffen.

Der Jugendroman spiegelt die zwei Welten der 16jährigen Starr wider, die zum Einen in einer armen Nachbarschaft lebt und zum Anderen an eine Privatschule in einer wohlhabenden Gegend geht, doch beide Welten stoßen aufeinander, als ihr dunkelhäutiger Kindheitsfreund Khalil von einem weißen Polizisten erschossen wird. Starr ist die einzige Augenzeugin und durch Khalils Unschuld findet sie ihre Stimme. Die Autorin ist gegen Rassismus und ihr Debütroman ist jetzt schon „ein Klassiker“ (John Green).

Als wir Angie Thomas beim Internationalen Literaturfestival trafen, las sie uns in der Originalsprache aus ihrem Roman vor. Danach wurde ebenfalls auf Deutsch vorgelesen. Schließlich stellten sowohl der Moderator als auch wir Fragen. Zum Schluss signierte die Autorin unsere Bücher und wir konnten Fotos mit ihr machen.

Dies war eine einzigartige Möglichkeit und unsere Erwartungen wurden erfüllt.
